Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – December 30, 2013
The end of the year is upon us and we say good-bye to 2013. As we begin 2014, I wanted to provide you with five strategies to consider that will help accelerate the financial growth of your business and boost its’ performance.
  1. Think about effectiveness, not efficiency. It doesn’t matter how efficiently you work as an organization if you are not focused on the right activities, you will fail. Get better at what you’re already good at.
  2. Increase customer retention, not customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction only tells you if you are meeting customer expectations. What if those expectations are too low? Focus on retaining existing customers and having them bring in new customers.
  3. Focus on growth, not cost savings. No organization ever cut their way to success, only survival. Focus on new products and new markets, and growing with your existing customer base.
  4. Focus on boosting performance, not increasing productivity. It’s important that we boost performance, meaning how we achieve something, instead of focusing on how productive we are. Performance focuses on results, productivity focuses on activities.
  5. Determine how to drive innovation, not eliminate waste. When you drive innovation you make enhancements and improvements to existing products and services and develop new ones, not just remove waste from existing operations.
All of these strategies are covered in my book, Redefining Operational Excellence, to be released by AMACOM in mid-2014. These ideas are just a sneak preview.

Feel free to use them to make 2014 a prosperous year.

Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – December 23, 2013
Toronto was hit with an ice storm this week that knocked out power for about 300,000 homes, including those my neighbourhood, which lost power for about 24 hours. Trees were strewn all over the roads, driving was treacherous, and flights were delayed. But the prevailing sentiment in my neighbourhood was one of calm and happiness.

Since we had no power, families packed quickly and started driving vacations early or to search for the nearest relative with power. Neighbours helped each other move fallen branches from roads and driveways. People were still out walking dogs and exercising. We all felt that this was a beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. So instead of complaining, we all decided to make the best of it.

How do you approach what life throws at you? Do you embrace the change and make the best of it, or do you get angry and play the victim?

This holiday season is a good time to reflect on those questions.

Merry Christmas. Happy holidays. And I wish you a happy and healthy new year.

Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – December 16, 2013
It’s the time of year when everyone starts to slow down and reflect on the year that’s been. We work less, we enjoy more, and we start to think about changes we want to make for the new year.

I’ve never been a big fan of New Year’s resolutions for two reasons. Firstly, they rarely stick. Secondly, and more importantly, why wait to make the change? There are still two weeks left in the year. Why wait to start that diet or set up that meeting with a new prospective customer?

Executives are still working. Companies are still running. Customers are still buying. New products and services are still being invented and enhanced. There is no reason to wait until 2014 to make the behaviour changes you want to make. There is no better way to start off the new year well than by finishing off this year strongly.

While everyone else is slowing down, you speed up. That might create the competitive advantage you need to make 2014 your best year ever.

And to help you start the year off right, sign up for my free Operational Excellence workshop on January 30. You will learn strategies you can apply right away to help improve the profitability and performance of your organization.

WestJet goes above and beyond for its passengers

WestJet pulled one of the greatest marketing stunts I have seen in a long time and have figured out how to make the video of it go viral. As of this post, it has been viewed more than 6.6 million times in three days.

Talk about an unexpected surprise for WestJet passengers on two flights. This should make customer retention just a little bit easier.
