Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – August 18, 2014
Last week I spoke with two clients about brand new initiatives that we are going to work on together. These initiatives are going to force these organizations to think differently and operate differently in order to improve their results. They are willing and able to try new things.

This weekend I was away with my family and I tried fly boarding (disclaimer – I’m not in this video) and jumped of a 38-foot ledge to a short free fall before landing safely on the ground. I was willing and able to try new things.

In order to grow both as a person and an organization, you need to be willing to try new things. Sometimes you will succeed and sometimes you will fail, but you will always grow and develop.

What are you going to try next?

Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – August 11, 2014

If you are really trying to foster an innovative environment in your organization, you need to be able to answer three questions:

  • What is innovative and what’s not innovative for us?
  • Why are we innovating?
  • What impact will the innovation have?

Innovation is about raising the level of performance, not about restoring past levels of performance.

Many organizations consider themselves to be innovative, but don’t really know what that means. The use words like “entrepreneurial culture,” and “innovative culture,” but ultimately can’t describe what that means. Innovation for the sake of innovation means nothing.

How do you define innovation for your organization?

Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – August 4, 2014
Too often when organizations talk about operational excellence, they focus on methodologies to improve processes, streamline operations, eliminate waste, and increase standardization. But these results are only sustainable if you assume that every customer and every employee is the same. Which of course is not true.

Operational excellence is a mindset. It’s not a destination or a methodology. The most successful organizations practice operational excellence on the front lines by realizing that it’s the ability of their front line people that make or break the company. They focus on strategies around growth and innovation and performance boosts.
