Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – January 4, 2016

I recently delivered a teleconference on prioritization, but the main focus was finding your ONE priority. Many organizations struggle with prioritization because everything becomes a priority for them. They don’t make decisions about which initiatives or ideas are more important than others. In order to find your one priority, you need yo ask yourself two questions:

  1. What is your organization’s ideal future state?
  2. What is the fastest and most effective way to achieve that future state?

The responses to those questions informs the decisions that you make.

Once you have identified your one priority, everything your organization does should align with that one priority. As other initiatives or ideas come up, you then ask yourself another question:

Will these new initiatives help my organization achieve its ideal future state more rapidly or effectively?

If the answer is ‘Yes,” then you need to consider other factors and possibly identify your new one priority.

If ‘No,” then you should move on.

Identifying your one priority is about providing your organization with a laser focus on how to best achieve dramatic results. I’m guessing that is better than the way you currently operate, piling one priority on top of another.

Teleconference on finding your one priority

I recently delivered a teleconference on finding your one priority. This concept could have the single biggest impact on your organization in 2016. If you don’t know your one priority, and you can’t articulate it both inside and outside the organization, then you will constantly be struggling to determine where time and money and resources will be best utilized.

This is one of the key components to operational excellence.

Here is the recording for those that are interested in taking a listen.

Andrew Miller on operational excellence, strategy, life balance and everything in between

Toronto – November 30, 2015

When I reflect back on some recent conversations with clients and prospective clients, prioritization has been a key theme. Where should we be spending time and effort? What priorities will provide us with the best results? We have a lot of initiatives on the go, which ones make the most sense?

When having these discussions, I always start with having them focus on what they want to achieve. What is your ideal future state? Where do you want to be in six months?

Then I have them review strategies and initiatives that best align with where they want to be and can have a significant impact.

If you are having an issue with prioritization, it’s because you have too many priorities.

Consider this question: What can you do that will provide you with significant benefit and help you rapidly progress towards your ideal future state?

If you can answer that question, you will have issues with prioritization.

Discipline

The hardest thing about maintaining discipline is when life throws you a curve.

It could be discipline about going to the gym, reading the newspaper, calling prospects, or even writing a blog.

Discipline is easy to have when there are no distractions, so how do you maintain that discipline when you have too many distractions?

You prioritize, plain and simple. If you have too many priorities, then nothing is a priority. Pick three things and act on them. That will be more productive than trying to move 10 things forward at once.

Step back, identify three priorities and be disciplined about moving forward on them. By doing this you remove the other distractions because you have not identified the priorities (not had them identified for you).

See? Wasn’t that easy?
